Why May I Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are several reasons why we might recommend a tooth extraction in Dripping Springs. Some of the most common reasons for a tooth removal are:

  • Fractured Tooth: If you have a small crack in your tooth, we can probably repair it. On the other hand, if the tooth has a large crack in it, we might not be able to save it.

  • Periodontal Disease: If you have periodontitis that is not treated appropriately, it could lead to bone loss that is so significant that your tooth becomes loose. As a result, we might need to remove the tooth entirely.

  • Cavities: We can fill small and even moderate cavities with a traditional dental filling. If it is too large, we might recommend a dental crown. Unfortunately, if it is too large for a dental crown, we may need to remove the tooth.

  • Overcrowding/Orthodontic treatment: If your teeth are too crowded, your orthodontist may recommend extractions to create room for your teeth to align properly.

Importantly, there is also a chance that you might need to have your wisdom teeth removed. We will use x-rays and regular exams to keep an eye on your wisdom teeth, and if they start to come in, we may recommend that they be taken out. For more complex cases, we may refer a patient to an oral surgeon who’s office is specially equipped to better address the surgical needs.

How Do You Perform a Tooth Extraction?

When it is time for a tooth extraction, we will do everything we can to keep you as comfortable as possible. At Dripping Springs Family Smiles, we offer sedation dentistry, so if you would like to learn more about this option, please talk to our team.

We will numb the extraction site before we remove your tooth. There is a chance that you might feel a bit of pressure, but you should not feel uncomfortable. The tooth should come out relatively easily, and once we are done, we will review all the necessary post-op care instructions with you.

For example, we may put you on a strict diet to give your mouth time to heal. Count on our team to provide you with the tooth extraction care you deserve.
